Craniosacral Therapy in Palo Alto

Craniosacral therapy at the Palo Alto Massage Therapy Center is a gentle, hands-on form of bodywork that uses light touch and subtle movements around the head, spine, sacrum, and other areas of the body. Unlike deep tissue or traditional massage, craniosacral therapy uses very little pressure and is intended to provide a quiet, deeply relaxing experience.

What Is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral therapy has its roots in the work of osteopathic physician William Garner Sutherland, who developed the concept of cranial osteopathy in the early 20th century. Later approaches to craniosacral therapy expanded on these ideas using gentle touch around the skull, spine, and sacrum.

During a session, the practitioner uses light, sustained contact and subtle movements to work with areas of tension throughout the body. Craniosacral practitioners traditionally describe this work in terms of the craniosacral system and the movement of cerebrospinal fluid.

These concepts and their proposed therapeutic mechanisms have not been firmly established by scientific research. Many clients, however, find the extremely gentle touch and slow pace of craniosacral bodywork calming and relaxing.

What to Expect

Craniosacral therapy can generally be performed while the client remains comfortably clothed. The practitioner may place their hands lightly around the head, neck, back, sacrum, or other areas while using very gentle pressure and subtle movements.

Because the technique is so light, it can be a good option for clients who prefer a gentler approach to bodywork or who do not enjoy the pressure associated with traditional massage.

Sessions are typically quiet and unhurried, with an emphasis on comfort and relaxation.

Benefits of Craniosacral Therapy

Clients may choose craniosacral therapy to:

  • Promote deep relaxation
  • Ease feelings of physical tension
  • Reduce everyday stress
  • Encourage a sense of calm
  • Experience gentle bodywork without deep pressure
  • Promote body awareness and overall well-being
  • Provide quiet time for rest and relaxation

Individual experiences with craniosacral therapy vary, and it should be considered a complementary wellness practice rather than a treatment for medical or neurological conditions.
